The Girl From Farris Edgar Rice Burroughs 9781162695730 Books

Burroughs wrote several contemporary-based short novels that are more entertaining than a regular Burroughs reader would expect. This is probably the weakest of that bunch, but still handles the story well -- the regeneration of young women dragged into a clearly prostitutional and dope background. THE GIRL FROM HOLLYWOOD is the best, a strong story, interesting characters, a family and geography based most probably on Burroughs own circumstances and family after establishing the Tarzana ranch. THE OAKDALE AFFAIR follows in interest, and is better than this book, but both are worth reading. THE MUCKER is somewhat related, but much more of an adventure novel (in two parts), and not really as good a novel as the HOLLYWOOD book. Surprisingly, one of my favorites among every one that I have read, which is every one them!

The Girl From Farris Edgar Rice Burroughs 9781162695730 Books Reviews

Farris's is a house of ill-repute, and when a police officer set on throwing Farris in jail sees a woman escaping out of the back of the building in silky and scanty dress, he corners her and blackmails her into testifying against Farris. At the trial, she contends that Farris held her there against her will and stole her clothes to keep her prisoner. Her beauty and appearance of innocence endears her to the jury, and after the court proceedings, one man approaches her and offers to help her get back on her feet. Stunned by his pure intentions but too prideful to accept, she is inspired to try to live a good life.

She gets a job and although she can barely afford to care for herself, she stays on the straight and narrow, but her past is bound to catch up to her.

The Girl From Farris's reads easily the way Burroughs' other works typically do. It is short, entertaining, and satisfying with a cute little twist ending.
Building the collection
Not as well known as other works by this author, this an interesting urban, drama set in the early 20th century. Good read.
I have collected just about every book written by E.R.B. with a few exceptions. This is one of them. Glad to see some of the not so popular E.R.B.'s books back in print.
No Problem with this item.
This book was not the adventure story one is normally ready for in a Burroughs novel. It followed along the same lines as the "Mucker". I did enjoy it for it's story, of course being a Burroughs book, I knew how it would end.
